Seismic zone of india

seismic zones of India are defined as per the Indian Standard Code of Practice for Seismic Design of Buildings (IS 1893:2002). The code divides the country into four seismic zones based on the intensity of ground shaking and the potential for earthquake occurrences. The seismic zones are:

  1. Zone 2: This zone covers areas with the lowest seismic risk, including parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.

  2. Zone 3: This zone covers areas with moderate seismic risk, including parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.

  3. Zone 4: This zone covers areas with high seismic risk, including parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, the north-eastern states, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

  4. Zone 5: This zone covers areas with the highest seismic risk, including the entire Himalayan region and the Kutch region in Gujarat.

It's worth noting that in 2016, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) updated the seismic zoning map and included two more zones, namely Zone 0 and Zone 1. Zone 0 represents areas with no seismic risk, while Zone 1 represents areas with very low seismic risk. However, the IS 1893:2002 code has not yet been updated to reflect these changes.
